Regards statistiques sur l’histoire de l’émigration internationale au Sénégal

Over the last thirty years, a wealth of research has shed light on the dynamics of the Senegalese international emigration. Alongside numerous qualitative studies, some quantitative surveys were conducted from a transnational perspective. Using this series of unique statistical outputs (EMUS, 1993; RGPH, 2002 and MAFE, 2008), we propose to analyse the recent period of international emigration from Senegal. This is done by comparing the data results of EMUS and those of the last Senegalese census at the national scale on the one hand, and examining the changes in emigration trends from Dakar since the 1970s on the other hand. This study tempers the idea that Senegalese emigration has intensified and reveals the importance of “Senegalese regions” on the evolution of migration flows and the distribution of destinations.
